Wine Tasting 101

The first thing to remember about tasting wine: you don't need to be an expert to enjoy it or to know what you like or don't like.

If you are new to wine tasting, it can be an intimidating experience. Many people feel they may be judged if they do not know everything about wine, however, this is not the case.

Most tasting room attendants are more than happy to walk you through your first tasting. After all, this is what they do. They love wine and are proud to share the knowledge they've gained over the years.

Many tasting rooms work hard to make sure their patrons feel comfortable, and the beauty of tastings is that nobody expects you to know everything. You may learn new things each time you visit a tasting room. Each person has their own wealth of knowledge and sharing that is what makes it fun! Information is vast and ever-changing so do not hesitate to ask questions.

Use different senses when tasting wine. Here are a few tips to try when doing a tasting:

1: Look at the wine

Spend a couple of seconds just looking at the wine. What color is it? What is the clarity? Is it opaque? Does it seem watery or thick?

2: Smell the wine

Gently swirl the wine around in the glass to release the aroma, put your nose over the opening of the glass and inhale. Does it smell fruity? What scents can you pick out? Think broadly before trying to narrow it down to specific scents.

3: Taste the wine

Last but not least, actually taste the wine. Feel the texture in your mouth. The taste of wine is time-based, meaning you will notice different flavors as you sip it. From the time it initially hits your tongue to the last flavor (or finish), the taste of the wine will change. There are different methods for how people may taste their wine but the first thing to remember is to just enjoy yourself and your present company.

One of the best parts about doing a tasting is that you get to try many different types of wine. The more you taste, the more you will develop an idea of what you like or don't like.
